Youth Sports Volunteer - Schalmo - 2026

Schalmo Family YMCA

Volunteer coaches play a crucial role at the YMCA, providing more than just skill development on the field. They create a safe and supportive environment and act as a positive role model for our youth! Our volunteers help to instill values like teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination along the way. By dedicating just a few hours each week, volunteer coaches have the power to make a significant difference in a child’s life! Responsibilities may include coaching or assisting with practices and games, teaching fundamental skills, and encouraging good sportsmanship. Volunteers may provide mentorship and help athletes build confidence, teamwork, and discipline. Sports volunteers may assist with equipment inventory, setting up and cleaning up fields and courts, and organizing participants. Volunteers also embody and teach the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Sports volunteers should maintain a safe environment by creating a positive and inclusive experience for all participants. Our YMCA staff will provide training, equipment, and resources to help volunteers feel prepared. Opportunities are often available for people with various levels of experience, from seasoned athletes to those new to coaching. Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Y!

A foundational commitment of the Y is to provide a healthy atmosphere for the growth and development of children. The Y aims to promote a positive, nurturing environment while protecting consumers, employees, and volunteers. The YMCA of Central Stark County has a zero tolerance policy in place and will not tolerate the mistreatment or abuse of consumers in its programs. With this in mind, volunteers are categorized as either High-Access or Low-Access and depending on the nature of the position, specific requirements in screening, training, and supervision are conducted prior to beginning service. NOTE: For purposes of these policies, the term “consumer” is used to describe all vulnerable populations of people, with emphasis on youth (anyone under age 18) that we serve at our YMCA locations and in our programs.

During the season, we understand circumstances may change, so if you are not able to volunteer any longer, please let our Sports Director and/or Coordinator know, so that we can update our teams and schedules. Thank you for communicating any changes in a timely manner!
